The Big Data Maturity Model, which was created after examining successful big data developments, can help organisations analyse the potential of their big data. The model consists of four phases: efficiency, effectiveness, new services and transformation. The most important driver behind the model is the scale of organisations’ economic or social impact by means of big data. While the impact may be larger in the more mature phases, this entails increased organisational and technical complexity. The model can be used both descriptively and prescriptively. It is not necessary to complete all four phases, as organisations can determine their desired position in the model and concentrate on that. On the basis of a survey among TNO experts in the field of big data, we have identified five challenges for organisations that want to position themselves on the model. We then defined the organisational and technical capabilities that the organisations need to develop for each challenge in order to innovate or to create value with big data.
